Het Moorveldshof – Grandeur in the South of Limburg
History
The farm Moorveldshof is built in 1895 and is still pretty much the same as it was built in that time. There are no big interventions made, other than making it into three different apartments. This is also why there are still a lot of old details found in this farm, such as the big porches with the round arches and the windows with the stone windowsills.
Concept
In my design I want to focus on the higher class and business people. Because of the location, near the airport, near Maastricht and near the Belgium and German border, it is a perfect place for a business center where people can have meetings, can go to a restaurant and even sleep. And this will al still be in the rustic and rural area of South Limburg, near the forest and between the meadows. Therefor my design will focus on a congress center, with a hotel, restaurant and wellness with a clear distinction between old and new, and a high point of luxury and special experience.
So my main question is “is it possible to make an old and historical farm into an luxury congress centrum with hotel and wellness with grandeur and allure, without losing the characteristic elements and natural touch.”
Intervention
The struggle was not fitting the program in the farm, but how to deal with the facade. The old farm has a very closed façade, whereas the new centrum needs a very open character. But I found the solution in the farm itself. In the farm big doors where closed when they did not need them anymore and made a new opening when it was needed. They left the old scares visible.
By closing al the existing windows with new isolated slightly recessed brick walls it is not necessary to think about the old windows and can the new one be placed where ever there is a need for, but there no loss of the old characteristics.
